VO2 Max and Longevity: A Top Predictor of Lifespan

VO2 max sounds like a number for athletes. In reality it predicts how long you live better than almost any other fitness marker. What VO2 max tells you

VO2 max is the maximum oxygen your body uses at peak effort, measured in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. On a treadmill test, fitness often appears in METs, where one MET equals your resting rate. A higher VO2 max means your heart pumps more blood with each beat, your blood carries more oxygen, and your muscles pull more of it from the bloodstream. In plain terms, stairs feel easier, recovery comes quicker, and your body holds a bigger reserve for illness and age.

The size of the effect stands out next to familiar risks. In the same study, low fitness against high fitness gave an adjusted hazard ratio of about 5.0 for death from any cause. Smoking sat near 1.4, diabetes near 1.4, and coronary artery disease near 1.3. Poor fitness was the single strongest marker in the group.

This is not one study standing alone. A JAMA meta-analysis pooled 33 studies and more than 100,000 people. Every one-MET gain in fitness linked to a 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause and a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
