Walking Pace Predicts Lifespan: What the Research Shows

Walking pace is one of the strongest predictors of how long you live. Brisk walkers live longer than slow walkers. The gap is bigger than most people expect. A 2011 JAMA pooled analysis of nine cohort studies covering 34,485 older adults found that at age 75, predicted 10-year survival ranged from 19 percent in slow walkers to 87 percent in brisk walkers, after adjusting for age, sex and other risk factors.

UK Biobank work from 2022 went further. Brisk walkers had significantly longer telomeres than slow walkers. Researchers estimated the biological age gap at around 16 years. Mendelian randomisation analysis pointed to a causal direction: pace influences telomere length, not the reverse.

Why pace tracks lifespan

Walking pace reflects the integrated health of multiple systems: cardiovascular capacity, muscle strength, balance, joint mobility, and nervous system function. A slow walk usually means one or more of those systems is struggling. A brisk walk means they work together efficiently. Over decades, the differences compound.

What counts as slow, average and brisk

The Studenski analysis defined gait speed using a measured 4-metre walk: less than 0.6 m/s as slow, around 0.8 m/s as average, and more than 1.2 m/s as brisk. The UK Biobank studies used self-reported pace bands instead, with brisk defined as fast on purpose, with some effort.

For an adult under 60, a brisk pace is one where you breathe harder, hold the ability to speak in short sentences but would not choose to. For an older adult, brisk is relative to baseline. The principle is the same. The faster you walk relative to your capacity, the longer you live on average.

How to shift your walking pace

If you walk slowly today, you do not have to become a speed walker overnight. Pace shifts in 4 weeks with simple intervals. Start with your natural pace. Add 30 seconds of deliberate effort. Then 30 seconds of recovery. Repeat five times. Do this three times a week. After four weeks, your baseline pace will feel slower and your new normal will be faster.

For older adults, training also improves the underlying systems that drive pace: leg strength, balance and aerobic capacity. Two short resistance sessions a week add measurable gait speed gains in 12 weeks.

Walking pace as a health metric

Clinicians now use gait speed as a key indicator of health in older adults. A slow gait is a red flag for frailty, illness and poor outcomes. A brisk gait signals integrated function. The body tells a real story through pace. Tracking it once every six months is a simple, free way to monitor ageing.

Practical takeaways

Measure your usual pace once every six months. Walk a measured 4 metres and time it. Use intervals (30 seconds harder, 30 seconds easy, repeated 5 times) three days a week to shift pace upward. Add two short strength sessions to support the underlying systems. The improvements show up in 4 weeks of pace shifts and 12 weeks of strength gains.
