DIY Electrolyte Drinks: The 3-Ingredient Recipe Hydrates Faster Than Water

It is mid-afternoon. Your eyes glaze. You pour a glass of water, drink it, sit back down. Thirty minutes later the fog is still there. The water is the problem. Plain water replaces volume but does not always restore the mineral concentration your cells need. A 2 percent fluid loss is enough to impair attention, short-term memory, and reaction time according to a 2012 review in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

A three-ingredient drink built around the same principle as the World Health Organization's Oral Rehydration Solution gives the body what plain water alone does not.

Why plain water alone falls short

You lose sodium, potassium, and small amounts of magnesium every hour through sweat, breathing, and normal kidney function. Plain water replaces the volume but dilutes the remaining mineral concentration. The kidneys excrete the extra free water and the cellular signal for hydration does not fully reset. For light office days that is rarely a major issue. On warm days, after exercise, or after a poor night of sleep, the mineral side matters as much as the volume.

The sodium-glucose absorption principle

The small intestine carries a protein called SGLT1 that transports sodium and glucose together across the gut wall. Water follows. This co-transport is the mechanism the World Health Organization built into its Oral Rehydration Solution in the 1970s. The Lancet has called the formula one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century. The current WHO reduced-osmolarity formula contains 75 mmol/L of sodium and 75 mmol/L of glucose, calibrated for maximum absorption.

The 90-Second Recipe
Per 1 litre of water
1/4 tsp
Table salt (sodium)
1.5 tbsp
Sugar or honey (glucose)
1/2
Lemon or lime (potassium, flavour)

Stir for 30 seconds until salt and sugar dissolve. Drink within 24 hours. Refrigerate if not consumed immediately.

When to drink it

On waking
First glass
Replace the 500 to 700 ml lost overnight through breath and sweat. Before coffee.
Afternoon dip
13:00 to 15:00
Pre-empt the post-lunch fog. Better than a third coffee.
Post-exercise
Within 30 min
After any session that left sweat on your clothes. Replaces sodium losses fastest.

Cost compared with commercial options

A litre of commercial electrolyte drink usually costs 2 to 4 pounds in London supermarkets. A litre of this home version costs around 10 to 20 pence using pantry ingredients. Daily use saves roughly 50 to 110 pounds per month, with no sweeteners or artificial colours.

When not to use it

If you have high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart failure, or are on sodium-restricted advice from a clinician, do not add salt to drinking water without medical guidance. Pregnant women should follow NHS hydration advice and discuss any change with their midwife. For children with significant illness or vomiting, use a clinically formulated rehydration product (Dioralyte or equivalent) rather than a home recipe.

What to expect

Most people notice reduced thirst and clearer focus within 30 minutes of the first glass. Across three to five consistent days, common reports include fewer afternoon energy dips, less dry mouth, and shorter recovery after walks or workouts. The mechanism is not new. The ingredients are not exotic. The result is the body doing what it already knows how to do, with the materials it needs.
