7,000 Steps a Day: What the Largest Meta-Analysis Shows

The 10,000-step target on every fitness tracker has no clinical origin. It came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign called Manpo-kei. Recent research has steadily lowered the bar. The largest meta-analysis to date, by Paluch and colleagues in The Lancet Public Health (2022), pooled 15 cohort studies covering more than 47,000 adults. The mortality benefit of more daily steps plateaued around 6,000 to 8,000 steps in older adults and 8,000 to 10,000 steps in younger adults. 7,000 a day is the round number most adults should target.

Where the 10,000-step rule came from

Yamasa, a Japanese pedometer maker, launched Manpo-kei in 1965. The name translates to "10,000 steps meter". The round figure stuck. Decades of fitness marketing turned a sales tagline into a global health rule, despite no clinical evidence supporting the exact number.

The Paluch 2022 meta-analysis is the first pooled accelerometer-based study large enough to settle the question. Researchers analysed step counts and all-cause mortality across 15 prospective cohorts from the US, UK, Australia and Japan.

Why steps work for long-term health

Daily steps reflect the low-grade movement that preserves muscle, maintains bone density, stabilises blood sugar, lowers blood pressure and keeps the cardiovascular system responsive. Unlike a one-off gym session, steps accumulate across the day. The consistency is what makes them protective.

An average pace also helps. The Paluch follow-up paper in JAMA Network Open showed peak step cadence (steps per minute) added a small independent benefit on top of total daily count. Walking with intent beats shuffling.

How to hit 7,000 steps in a London routine

Most people who reach the target weave movement into existing habits. A realistic breakdown:

  • Walk to and from the tube, bus stop or car: 2,000 steps.
  • Take stairs not the lift through the day: 500 steps.
  • A 15-minute lunchtime walk: 1,800 steps.
  • Park further from the supermarket entrance: 500 to 1,000 steps.
  • Walk to a colleague's desk instead of pinging on Slack: 200 to 400 steps.

Total: 5,000 to 6,000 from habit alone. Add one evening walk of 20 to 30 minutes and you clear 7,000 most days.

Starting if you are far below 7,000

Add 1,000 steps per week. Start at 3,000, then 4,000, then 5,000. You reach 7,000 within four weeks. The body adapts. The habit hardens. The jump feels normal, not forced.

Practical takeaways

Aim for 7,000 daily steps as a baseline. Track with a phone or basic wrist counter. Consistency matters more than accuracy. Pair steps with two short resistance training sessions a week to protect muscle. Going much above 9,000 steps adds little incremental mortality protection, so do not feel pressured to chase 10,000.
